Our Family’s World Journey

  • Out of the Hills and to the Beach
    November 9, 2015
This week we moved from the beautiful hills of Guanajuato to the warm, sandy beaches in Playa del Carmen. Our roof top pool has a breath taking view of the vast, blue ocean, and at night, from the hammock on our private rooftop, Nolan and I rock into the night as we stare at the bright stars that cover the sky. I really don’t want this month to end.

  • The Ugly Face of Homesickness
    September 20, 2014
The first time Hector wanted us to do the Paleo diet, after 8 days, I had a total break down and cried bitterly as I yelled, “You are starving our family!” True words from a carb addict, right? He was shocked and told me to eat an apple. That wasn’t the best thing for him to say. He should have asked for something that wouldn’t hurt if it flew at him. Like a piece of bread… Oh wait, we didn’t have any. Because he forbade it. {Not really. I did the diet willingly, but an addict has to hate on someone. The second time we did the diet, I was much happier.} Day 8 in Brazil was a rainy day. As I took clothes from a washing machine to hang them, because there AREN’T ANY dryers, I thought of my beautiful front-loading dryer, calling to me from the storage unit....

  • Flying & Birthdays
    October 26, 2011
I was absolutely not looking forward to flying to New York. We had a lay over and would be traveling all day. Plus, Darian is so active and always wants to be going somewhere. But it turned out a lot better than I imagined. We flew pretty early in the morning. He work up when we left through the airport, so he fell asleep on the plane for a while because he missed some of his sleep at night. And he got an extra seat because we flew southwest and could save him a seat if the flight wasn't full. He woke up for the layover and got all of his energy out by pushing his stroller all around the airport. We had a ton of different activities for him and brand new toys he had never seen, so he had a really fun time on the plane. But here's what...

This is a one year old. So I think we are still exhausted from Darian's party and my birthday because we did nadda mucho for his actual birthday. We did, of course, sing him happy birthday, but it was a pretty low key day. Well, except for making sure we had everything ready to go to New York.

  • What's Up?
    October 22, 2011
This evening we went bowling with Christian and Alondra. Darian thought the bowling alley was legit. In fact, he said it was. (Not really.) But it had all of his favorites: food, music, flashing lights, balls, stairs, fun people. I bowled my best score ever and won on the first game. Then I bowled my worst score ever and came in last in the second game. Perhaps I have great talent that needs to be harnessed and refined. Ha. It's nice to mix things up. I also took on a new client to work with once my maternity leave ends--Mae Ross. She's an accomplished actress, dancer, and model. She owns an acting studio and has a great talent for coaching kids and teens and launching their acting careers by getting them agents and helping them nail auditions. She's very honest and sincere. I am looking forward to working with her.

  • My Birthday
    October 18, 2011
For my birthday, I wanted to do everything I love--take part in life--because my last birthday, I was very ill, hadn't slept for a couple days, could barely walk, couldn't sit, and had such chronic pain that labour didn't feel all that bad the next week. (Thank goodness I recovered right before I went into labour.) So I laughed at Darian being silly, got out the door early, and hit up the baby gym. I pushed buzz light year around, jumped in the bounce house, and played with all the neat toys until lunch time. Darian and I met up with Annie and Kylie at my favorite Armenian restaurant. The food was so good. The babies made a huge mess with the rice, and we didn't have to clean it up. After lunch, Annie and I went shopping for a while. We found a lot of cute things. Then Darian and...

  • Happy Birthday (Party) Darian
    October 15, 2011
For Darian's birthday party, we did a dance party--yo gabba gabba style. Darian's favorites include dancing, music, yo gabba gabba, snacks he can reach, family, friends, and little people. So that's what we gave him. It was a lot of fun to have so much of our family here. Hector's parents even came out from Arizona for the party! & DJ Lance also made an appearance. Darian was very, very happy. The party was very high tech thanks to Christian and Hector. We played a bunch of great yo gabba gabba music videos on the TV during the party and also did some games and dancy dance moves. You bet I got my dance on! The Little People. A couple of Darian's friends made it to his party! Now these aren't average little people. These are party animal little people. All three of them double birthday partied it this Saturday. • My Pregnancy
    October 10, 2011
It's almost been a year since Darian was born, which means it's been a year since I've been pregnant. It's unbelievable how fast time goes with reference points like giving birth and your baby's birth date. You're constantly reminded that time is moving forward from that one point and the days and months stack up quickly. Realizing that not only a year has gone by but also nine months blew my mind. I decided to capture those nine months in a blog post, where I, of course, rock that belly. Well, it starts at 3 months because that's about when I found out we were having a baby. 14 weeks (3 months) Palace of Versailles - France: 17 weeks Hanfeld, Germany for Maifest: 18 weeks Starnberg, Germany Just found out I'm having a boy! 19 weeks Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany: 20 weeks Munich, Germany: 22 weeks (5 months) Prague, Czech Republic: 23 weeks Berlin, Germany: 24 weeks Bonn, Germany: 29 weeks Munich, Germany 32 weeks (7 months?) October 6, 2011
Today, we went to Grandpa's office for lunch. Darian has a lot of fun there. He loves playing with everyone, looking out the windows at the cars, playing with the random things in people's offices,  and redecorating his grandpa's office. We finally got kicked out for making a mess. After lunch, we went to the Oma's to play. We had fun playing with Aunt Sierra too. While we were playing, I noticed the beautiful sky outside. The clouds were clearing up from yesterday, and they looked amazing over the hills. What a beautiful day.

  • Rainy Days
    October 5, 2011
Living in Germany for two and a half years can really change a California girl's view of rainy days. It rains about 50% of the days. So nothing changes when it rains--except everyone gets out their umbrellas. I guess I got use to it. It's the first time it's rained since we moved back to LA, so I just realized that I didn't have an umbrella any more. We stopped by a pharmacy/convenient store, and I picked one up. The lady checking me out was very confused. She asked if I'd be walking outside in the rain. (I was buying an umbrella. What did she mean?) I told her that'd I'd be getting in and out of the car going places. No reaction. For this rainy day, I wanted to get some hot food for lunch, go to the baby gym, and stop by a coffee shop for a warm, tasty...

In the picture above, he's looking to make sure Hector sees the owl too. Darian's aunt Jaicy and uncle Evrhet got him his first 1st birthday present. Because they were down from Nor Cal and Jaicy is always on top of everything, Darian got to have his present today. He got gray skinny jeans and a really cute long sleeved, button up, plaid shirt. Mickey's Halloween Party is a night at Disneyland exclusive to those attending the party, where adults and kids get to dress up, trick or treat for lots and lots of candy, go on rides, and dance the night away with the characters. We, of course, loved it. My sister in law Jaicy came down from Northern California to go, and Sierra, Christian, Alondra, Jena, and Jonathan came too.   Here's Darian pushing the stroller to the park's entrance without us. 😉   We decided to dress up as Yo Gabba Gabba characters. But I thought Darian would like to see a couple animals close up, especially because he's been having a lot of fun with all the different animal sounds, and now he could see them up close.   When Darian got up to the birds, they came up to him to check him out. I feel like there needs to be a dedicated day once or twice a year to just go through your things and get rid of everything that hasn't been used in the last 6-8 months. We even somehow accumulated a lot of stuff while we were in Germany that we had to get rid of. It's a really nice feeling not owning extra things. We'll see how long that lasts.

Really, he couldn't wait. I didn't even have a chance to put my swimsuit on before he made his way over to the pool and had his heart set on putting his little feet in. He ended up taking a big nap, so we had a really fun time swimming and diving for those sinker things. It was a nice break. I did some pretty impressive flips underwater. haha And we ate some delicious food. Darian woke up after everyone was done swimming, so I didn't get a chance to swim in the pool with him, which would have been a lot of fun. Well, here we are in Southern California. It's really hot here. And during this heat wave, we're out at car lots with our baby trying to find a car before our week's rental is due (again). We're also super busy trying to get settled and moving my parents to their new house and getting their old house ready to be show ready for realtors. There's a ton to get done, and everything is super crazy, which is probably why Hector put baby food on the roof of the car and forgot about it. I can't believe the little pink spoon sat tight the entire time on the freeway. Yeah, Darian has a pink spoon because we haven't gotten to the suite case with his spoons. • Flying with an Infant
    February 18, 2011
Darian has now flown six times. As long as he's sleeping, sucking on his binky, nursing, or chewing on something during take off, landing, or any changes in air pressure, he's his normal self. One time, he wasn't doing either of those things while we landed. He didn't want a binky or to nurse. He just wanted to grab things. After landing, he started crying in pain. I nursed him for a couple of minutes, and his ears popped, and he was fine. My biggest concern was his ears popping, but that's easily solved. I really don't think that flying with an active infant is that difficult. Here's what we do to keep him calm and quiet: Don't stress. If he starts crying, I tell myself that he can cry as long and as loud as he wants. Once I accept that fear and any social anxiety that goes along...

My mom picked us up from the Long Beach Airport and took us to Johnny Rebs'. We had a really great time, and the food is really good. For the first time, Darian just suddenly fell asleep. We didn't have to lie him down or anything. He just shut his eyes. We were amazed, and it was so cute. When I was little, I always loved eating a peanut and throwing the shell on the floor. I thought it was the coolest think that it was allowed! There aren't too many peanuts on the fool yet. Ah! Here it is. My home town. (A quick shot from the freeway.) It just looked so pretty as we were driving into it. It's been raining a lot, so it didn't look brown and sparse. Usually, when we fly into LA, it just looks so dried up. It's amazing what a little bit of rain...

This morning, we headed out to Lehi, Utah to see Hector's cousin Cindy and her family. (I'd tag Cindy's blog if she updated it! 😉 hehehe) Cindy has three really cute girls, and one is three weeks older than Darian. Little baby Kirie was sleepy when we got there, so they didn't get a picture together. But here I am with Audrey, her second oldest daughter. Her girls have such pretty hair. After Cindy's, we had a sibling lunch at Malawi's. The pizza tasted pretty good until Rhet explained that he's sure their cheese comes from Malawian breast milk. After our lunch, we went with Rhet, Jaicy, and Noah to check out the flow ride at the Riverwoods. It's an indoor standing wave, which Rhet and Noah want to ride for an hour on their birthdays. Welcome to the Rodeo. It was my first. My first time seeing children ride sheep and get run over, men ride bulls and fly over the fence into the audience, and women ride around barrels without knocking them over. In short, texans at their best. Are the calves chasing the kiddies or are the kiddies chasing the calves? I am not sure either. Some of the kiddies were dragging the calves along and some of the calves were dragging the kiddies. I think I will buy a calf for Darian when he gets a little bigger! We thought this was a neat old fire engine. Darian liked it too. He is holding up his arms in excitement. My sister's family, the Hurst clan. They all got suited up for some rodeo action. • The Lava of Yesterday - Picacho Peak, Arizona
    February 5, 2011
Not so early one morning, Adelaide, Baby Darian, my brother Esteban and I headed south of our sleepy Stanfield town to the beautiful Picacho Peak. No, it is not a natural monument to the international sensation of Pokemon but rather an Arizona state park. Many, many years ago an unknown volcano spud up a mess and made a couple of peaks and small mountains. With Darian cozy in his baby carrier strapped to my chest, we hiked up the mountain. He enjoyed the hike, peeking occasionally and mostly sleeping. As we were hiking, I remembered how beautiful the desert is (to visit), and that I definitely need to step up the exercise program (and follow through with it). Originally, we we planned to make it to the top of the peak, but with the late start we decided to only hike to the "saddle". It took us about an hour or so...

Their friends were really nice, and Darian liked seeing everyone. Hector's mom wasn't feeling well, so I got to cook while she managed the kitchen from her chair. I'm not a very fast cook, but I think I did a pretty good job. Stevie's very fast, so he might of thought that he did a better job, but... hahaha. We had a lot of fun. Unfortunately, I missed the end of the party. Darian was having a hard time falling asleep. So I lied down in the bed next to him, so I could keep giving him his binki when he knocked it out, and I fell asleep! I woke up after everyone left. Still jet lagged.

We're using this book to get us started. It's really easy, and I'm really excited. The author shared how when she was changing her baby's diaper, the baby started signing for "doggy" by sticking her tongue out and panting. The mom signed and expressed that she was changing her diaper, but her daughter kept panting and pointed her finger. Her mom turned and saw her stuffed animal doggy across the room. She brought it to her daughter, and the baby was so happy. The mom was too because she never would have known that her daughter wanted her stuffed animal if she didn't know sign language. Darian's Room Our front room has a subarea, which is separated by a beam. We decided to have Darian's room in this area because it's where we hang out during the day, and it's our only available space in our little European house. Right now, the crib is only his day bed. During the night he sleeps in a bassinet that hooks to my side of the bed, which means that I only have to be half awake when I feed him at night because I don't need to get out of bed. Love it. Darian's Room It's so much fun having Darian as part of our family. He has such a fun and sweet personality and is always cracking us up. We love him dearly and can't wait for him to get to the stage where he starts smiling! The only way we know he is having fun is if he's...

He kept going cross-eyed, which was super funny. (It's common for babys to be cross-eyed in their first couple months. Because their cerebral cortex hasn't taken over their vision yet, it's not a cry for alarm. But it's pretty funny!) Darian Eli Olguin was born in Bavaria on his due date at some time between 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning. Everyone was so relieved that he finally came out that no one even thought to look at the clock. At about 3:00, we relalized the oversight and decided that he might of been born around 2:30, so the midwife wrote down 2:32 am. Darian After coming into the world, Darian let out a cry to show that his lungs were working and then was very quite. I was so exhausted and could barely sit up enough to see the baby. I looked at him in the midwife's hands and thought, "Where did that baby come from?!" It seemed like a dream. The midwife handed the baby to me immediately, and he snuggled up against my skin. We put a blanket over both of us to keep us warm. I stared at...

I had gotten maybe 5 hours of sleep combined in the last two nights, was 9 months pregnant, and was in so much pain that it killed to stand, sit, lie down, or move. My infection had returned, and the pain was so constant that it was becoming seemingly impossible to keep it out of my mind or sleep. A couple nights before, I saw a natural healing doctor, Marianna Ebner, for help because my surgery was not successful, and I had learned that they rarely ever were. Before getting half way down the street, you've got three or four under your shoe. Gross! I thought that slugs were snails without shells or snails looking for a new shell. But that's not entirely right. So it's time to clarify. My bffl wiki tells me that snails are those with shells and slugs are those without. But there are lots of different kinds of slugs, which were never born as snails. Scientists think slugs descended from snails. But there are occasions that make it appear like some have not. For some reason, evolution doesn't seem to explain everything clearly... And that's about it. Snails and slugs. Yuck!
