FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
& CONCERNS

MY BABY ISN’T SIGNING PERFECTLY

Baby sign isn’t about perfection. It’s about communication. Perfection can cripple your baby’s learning and confidence.

To teach your baby, model the sign while saying the word in a sentence. You can follow this with a “Yes!” as you sign it again while saying the word. After your baby starts signing, continue to sign back to your baby while saying the word.

When teaching your child any language, correcting him or her to make it perfect can kill morale. Instead, always happily sign back to your baby correctly while talking after your baby signs. Your baby will learn by your example on his own time.

If your baby asks for some help doing a sign, by all means help. Just remember that if you do something for your baby, she might take it as she can’t do it herself or you think she can’t do it herself.

WILL SIGNING TO MY BABY DELAY SPEECH?

Are you worried that waving goodbye while saying, “Bye, bye!” will teach your baby to only wave goodbye and never say, “Bye”? Of course not. In fact, “Bye, bye,” is often a word babies say early.

Speech therapists recommend that babies with delayed speech sign, so they can develop their communication skills and improve their speech.

Signing to your baby will develop their communication skills early, which leads to higher IQs.

Very, very few parents have said that teaching their baby to sign milk caused their baby to say milk later. “Milk” is actually a very difficult word to say. Say it slowly and follow your mouth, then your tongue, and last the click in the back of the throat. Your baby will naturally say this word later because it is difficult. But he can ask for milk well before he can talk.

Your baby will hear MORE speech if you sign because you will make more eye contact and find more opportunities to talk.

WHY WON’T MY BABY SIGN BACK?

+ Long before your baby signs back, your baby will recognize the signs. Use this to your advantage with signs like, come here, drop, and clean up.

+ If your baby is developing a gross motor skill like crawling or walking, your baby can stop signing or not start signing during this time. However, your baby is still learning the signs as you sign and talk. When this skill is mastered, she’ll show you how much she’s learned.

+ You can try signing on you. Like for Dog, you can start by signing on your baby’s leg.

+ You can sign two options for your baby, and let your baby choose. If your baby just shakes her head, sign back the option she chose.

+ Choose a sign that is super exciting for your baby to get the ball rolling. A favorite animal sign has helped a lot of stubborn signers.

+ Trust your baby. Not all babies start signing at the same time. It can take months or days to make the association. Remember, it’s not an exact science.

MY BABY WON’T SIT STILL TO LEARN

Baby sign is not about sitting still.

It’s about getting out into the world and discovering things with your baby.

Signing to your baby is just adding a sign as you talk and making eye contact.

Sometimes your baby won’t see you sign. Sometimes your baby will.

If your baby is active and curious, all the more reason to start signing and keep at it.

Let your baby surprise you.
