Lake Starnberg

After about a five minute bike ride, Hector and I usually go through a tunnel under the S-Bahn and are suddenly at the Starnberger See. It’s a beautiful, 14 mile long lake that was created by ice age glaciers from the Alps. It’s hidden behind the S-Bahn station in Starnberg, but once you get around it, you’re suddenly at a beautiful resort, hot spot. But today, that didn’t work out for us so well.

We thought it’d be a nice day to ride our bikes around part of the lake. However, once we got to the S-Bahn station, the entire tunnel was flooded and tied off. So we went a little further down to another tunnel to reach the lake. We started riding our bikes along the lake to discover that the water was overflowing.

Lake Starnberg

On some of the paths that were closer to the lake, it looked like we might fall off of them and into the lake. It definitely freaked me out! So while we’re standing there taking this picture, trying to figure out what we’ll do, a boat starts honking at us from the wooden bridge that we’re standing on. It took us a couple seconds to process that the bridge lifted up, and by the time we grabbed our bikes, it had already started moving. And being the mature adults that we are, we started screaming.

safe and sound

We’ll we made it. Barely. Haha. We got through this flooded area and rode for another hour, then we rode back home. The other parts of the lake weren’t as flooded. And the rest of the ride also turned out to be more relaxing than the first part! Another time, we want to start early (and with lots of food) and try to make it around the entire lake.
